Workshop Goals and Activities

1. Convene the agricultural systems modeling community and share latest findings, activities, and focus areas.
2. Advance three major focus area – Next Generation Knowledge, Data and Tools; Coordinated Global and Regional Assessment; and Modeling for Sustainable Farming Systems.
3. Plan AgMIP activities and outputs for the years ahead.

The 6th Global Workshop of the Agricultural Model Intercomparison and Improvement Project (AgMIP) will be held at Le Corum, Montpellier, France, June 28-30, 2016. AgMIP was founded in 2010 with the goal of building a worldwide community of agricultural modelers and stakeholders committed to improving the state of agricultural assessments for the years ahead. AgMIP Global workshops bring together this international community of scientists developing the next generation of integrated model systems that can inform decisions including the implementation of sustainable agricultural systems and assessments of food security in a changing world.

The combination of a warming Earth and an increasing population is expected to strain the world’s food systems in the coming decades. Food security, defined as the availability and adequate access at all times to sufficient, safe, and nutritious food to maintain a healthy and active life, now and going forward, is at risk in many places in the world. Farmers and others in the agricultural and food sectors are faced with the quadruple task of contributing to global reductions of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gas emissions, coping with an already-changing climate, delivering healthy and nutritious food, and sustainably managing soil and water resources. Agriculture is being called upon to ensure both human and planetary health.

In order to meet these coming challenges AgMIP has hosted the international modeling community at five Global Workshops including at FAO in Rome, Columbia University in New York City, and the University of Florida in Gainesville. AgMIP6, Seeking Sustainable Agricultural Solutions, will bring experts together in Montpellier, France and will be organized around 3 guiding themes:

Next Generation Knowledge, Data, and Tools – share new data, models, and advanced knowledge tools to ascertain sustainable production for the present and future.

Coordinated Global and Regional Integrated Assessments – linkages between international climate, markets, food policy and regional adaptation planning, including nutritional quality in crop production.

Modeling for Sustainable Farming Systems – develop protocol-based research to study linked climate, crop and economic models with emerging technology and adaptations of interest to stakeholders to anticipate climate smart investments.

Side sessions will take place on the day before (June 27th) and the day after (July 1st) AgMIP6 at the SupAgro Campus in Montpellier. These side events will comprise of workshops, training sessions, round tables, and general discussions that have been organized by the side event leaders.
